Lightning is one of the most beautiful atmospheric phenomenons around. Despite its beauty, lightning is an incredible force of nature that can be deadly for those caught off guard by a sudden thunderstorm. MORECAST meteorologist Gina Medici studied lightning for her Master’s at the University of Arizona and shares some of the science behind lightning along with some safety tips.
High winds have caused numerous trees to come down with scattered power outages across the Northeast overnight and this morning. Even as these winds slowly diminish through this evening, another small but potent disturbance will pass through overnight into Monday, combining with unseasonably frigid air to produce significant snow accumulations.
Two disturbances will move consecutively into the Northeast on Sunday and Monday which will provide a shot of cool air and a chance of rain/snow showers for the region. To the south and west, a ridge of high pressure will provide some warm and dry weather for the southeastern US and southern California. The following is the weather forecast for some key matchups:
Severe thunderstorms likely to develop across the eastern Plains and Missouri Valley Wednesday afternoon and evening with large hail, damaging wind gusts and isolated tornadoes. Widespread heavy rains will also cause flooding across northeast Texas, northern Louisiana, southern Arkansas, southwest Tennessee, and north and central Mississippi.
