Fortunes are changing in the South, where an an extremely dry autumn left several states in a severe drought. The lack of rain has devastated farms and helped fuel hundreds of wildfires. But the rains have started to return in the past week, and a couple systems are bringing more soaking rains to much of the southern U.S. early this week.

While beneficial rain is falling for parts of the drought stricken southeast, it’s too much of a good thing for portions of southeast Texas and Louisiana. It’s all being driven by a slow moving disturbance near the U.S.-Mexico border, drawing deep Gulf moisture northward that will bring more rain Sunday and Monday.

A strong, large November storm is developing across the central United States. On the northern flank, heavy snow is falling in the Dakotas, while severe storms are anticipated later Monday on the storm’s southern flank in places such as Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Tennessee.
