Historic Blizzard Shuts Down the Mid-Atlantic

A record setting winter storm hit the Northeast and mid-Atlantic region over the weekend, bringing hurricane force winds, freezing rain, coastal flooding and more than two feet (60 cm) of snow in many cities. Forecast models came into agreement several days out that a blizzard would affect the mid-Atlantic, giving officials and residents sufficient time to make the necessary preparations. A total of eleven states declared a state of emergency ahead of the storm, including New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, North Carolina, Virginia, Delaware, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Georgia.

An intense, slow-moving winter storm has begun to plow into the Mid-Atlantic states and will continue into Saturday evening. The storm will produce heavy snow which will combine with driving winds to create dangerous and prolonged blizzard conditions with near-zero visibilities and massive drifts. Snowfall totals of 18-24 inches will be common, with some locations seeing more than two feet, especially west of Interstate 95 in the higher terrain. Winds will gust 40 to occasionally 50 mph at times. Washington D.C. officials have shut down their subway system in anticipation of the hazardous blizzard conditions. Travel will become virtually impossible this evening and Saturday with secondary road closures likely to last through much of next week. An intense, slow-moving winter storm will move up the Eastern Seaboard Friday evening through Saturday and into early Sunday. Snowfall totals of 8-16 inches will be common with some isolated totals near a foot. Winds will gust 40 to occasionally 55 mph at times, highest along the coast, where some moderate coastal flooding could threaten low-lying areas.
