The start of winter looks set to bring widespread frosty morning across the much of eastern interior with the thermometer expected to drop sub zero through a large swathe of inland New South Wales, Victoria and parts of South Australia.
Even Alice Springs could see the mercury drop to -2°C later in the week, a far cry from it’s all time record low 0f -7.5°C recorded back in July 1976.
While the more elevated regions of the central and Southern Tablelands of NSW including Canberra and the Alpine areas of Victoria are likely see overnight minimums plummet below -5°C.
The more coastal state capitals of Sydney and Melbourne though cold, should escape the lowest of the temps due to the maritime influence however inland suburbs should still notice a distinct chill.
A large high pressure system is forecasted to dominate the weather across the south east states through the latter part of the week resulting clear bright days but bitterly cold nights.
The winter months can often bring an increase in another phenomenon static shocks for much of eastern Australia especially under cold dry conditions.
The culprits, a large high pressure system building across from the Bight combined with a low in the Tasman Sea often result in a period of persistent south westerly winds across eastern Australia.
Dried as they sweep across the vast south eastern interior, the low moisture content causes a build up of static on susceptible objects leading to some nasty shocks for any unsuspecting persons.
Usually moisture droplets in the air help dispel the charge unnoticed but in the afore mentioned conditions it can build up to a sizeable amount leading to quite a jolt.
So perhaps next time such conditions eventuate its best to adopt the non chivalric approach and let your nearest and dearest get the door first.
