A strong storm in the Pacific is tapping into rich tropical moisture. The storm’s cold front has shifted into northern California and is being accompanied by heavy precipitation. This frontal band is being enhanced by favorable terrain over northern California, resulting in flooding rains and heavy mountain snows.
More than 48 millions Americans are expected to travel 50 miles or more this Thanksgiving holiday according to AAA. The automotive group says 89 percent of those will be traveling by car, while 3.7 million people will fly to their destination. For those hitting the roads or the skies the day before Thanksgiving, there will be two large storm systems that could cause disruptions, especially in the Great Lakes and Pacific Northwest.
The first major winter storm of the season continues to bring snow and strong winds to the Upper Midwest into Saturday. Blizzard conditions will persist in portions of Minnesota and the Dakotas throughout Friday. Snow totals will likely reach over 12 inches of snow under the system’s heaviest snow bands.
