Heat Wave in the West Likely to Break Temperature Records

Record-breaking heat continues to impact the Pacific Northwest this week. Many valley locations will approach or rise above the century mark, with the hottest locations even surpassing 110°F.

Heat Wave: Thursday August 3rd Update

A strong ridge of high pressure will linger across the western U.S. through the end of the week. Dry grounds from recent drought conditions will allow locations to reach and exceed all-time record high temperatures. While, Wednesday and Thursday have been the hottest days, high temperatures will stay parked above 90 for a few days to come.

To go with the heat, the Northwest is also enduring smoke problems. Fires in Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia have been filling the skies with a dirty haze. This NASA imagery shows the clearly visible gray/brown colors of smoke.

Record Temperatures

Several major cities in the Northwest will reach record breaking temperatures. Areas of the Pacific Northwest rarely see temperatures this warm where average highs are in the 70s and low 80s. Seattle, Washington has only reached 100°F three times since records have began. Will they reach it a fourth time on Thursday?

With high temperatures on the way, it’s important to remember heat waves are the number 1 cause of weather related fatalities. To avoid heat stroke and common hazards associated with high temperatures, follow these heat safety tips:

  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Try to avoid long durations out in the sun.
  • Don’t leave children or pets in the car.
  • Check on the elderly.
