More Severe Weather Targeting the Northeast Today! : Saturday, July 1st

Lingering heat and moisture will allow for another round of severe storms today in the Northeast. The storms could even approach the New York City metro this evening with high winds and heavy rain.

Scattered storms on Friday produced numerous reports of high winds, especially in the Hudson River Valley and adjacent areas. A fireworks tent collapsed not far from Albany, injuring four people:

A similar scenario will play out today as the atmosphere in the Northeast remains primed for severe storm development. Much like yesterday, storms will intensify this afternoon before diminishing slowly through the late evening. Damaging wind gusts to 65 mph will be the primary hazard, although large hail or a tornado can’t be ruled out in isolated cases.

Model guidance indicates the storms could threaten NYC by the late afternoon/early evening hours. The image below shows our high-res model’s prediction of storms in the area around 7 pm. However, the storms could be on a weakening trend by then. Prepare for at least the possibility of dangerous storms, though, if you live in the five boroughs. Uber-patriots looking to get a head start on July 4th festivities may have to delay their fireworks plans.
