Rare Winter Thunderstorms Threaten the Northeast and Delmarva Saturday

Unusual February weather continues for the Northeast on Saturday with a threat of severe thunderstorms.

Weather Set Up

A cold front swinging through the Mid-Atlantic today is bringing the risk for severe weather along the I-95 corridor from New York City through North Carolina.

Severe Weather

Storms intensifying Saturday morning in Pennsylvania and West Virginia will continue to march east through the afternoon. Once reaching the lowlands of Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, these storms will tap into increased instability. Storms will be able to produce very strong winds near 60 mph. Additionally, storms further south toward Baltimore and DC have the potential to drop hail up to 1″. An isolated brief tornado will be possible from Pennsylvania through Virginia. The main threat from these storms will be wind, but keep notice as conditions may change rapidly.

Severe thunderstorms are relatively rare for the Northeast in February. Since many residents will not be expecting strong storms this early in the year, make sure to stay weather aware as storms develop today.
