Residents of the Chicago area were awestruck this morning as an eerie shelf cloud passed over the area.

Early risers were treated to a picturesque sunrise before gusty winds and lightning blew through.

At around 9am, a menacing looking line of storms moved over the city.

Morecast meteorologists were tracking the storm as it moved quickly to the south east. Plenty of lightning activity was captured by our systems.
In the end the storms had more bark than bite. Chicago’s O’Hare airport recorded just a 25 mph gust.
