Tropics Bringing the Paine to Make it Rain in the Southwest

Paine has weakened to a tropical storm. He is bringing 45 mph winds to numerous fish off the Mexican coast. Paine will continue tracking north, making landfall in Baja California by tomorrow evening. Paine will bring bouts of heavy rain to the Southwest.

Rain Threat

Paine will be weak as it comes ashore tomorrow evening. Winds will be less than 40 mph, but Paine will pump moisture north from the Tropics. Like Newton earlier this month, Arizona and California will see increased shower activity as this storm approaches. However, this storm differs from Newton in the intensity of the moisture pushing into the desert. This time around storms will be more localized with less total rainfall. The Colorado River will see the best chance for flash flood producing thunderstorms. Along the riverbank from the Grand Canyon to the Gulf of California showers and storms are likely to produce 1″-3″ of rain.  Numerous showers will develop across the Southwest from San Diego into Colorado, but the greatest flash flood risk looks to be along the Colorado River, mountains east of San Diego, and areas to the south of the Great Salt Lake.
