The Top 5 Weather Events This Week

After an eventful week of weather, MORECAST recaps the top five weather stories.

5. Snow in Wyoming and Montana

A cold front moving through the northern Rocky Mountains area led to significant snowfall in portions of Wyoming and Montana. The snow signaled the first signs of winter, just two weeks after the official start of meteorological fall.

 

4. Supercell storm in northern England

In an area that rarely sees thunderstorms, northern England experienced quite the lightning show Tuesday evening. Videos even suggest a supercell formed and could have produced a brief tornado. No major damage was reported.

3. Julia

Late Tuesday evening, tropical storm Julia became the first in recorded history to form over land in Florida. The storm moved north and brought strong wind gusts and heavy rain to Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. Now located roughly 250 miles off the North Carolina shore, Julia poses a minimal threat to land.

2. Typhoon Malakas

On Friday, Typhoon Malakas lingered to the east of Taiwan. With 130 mph winds, Malakas reached category 4 strength Friday and will track towards Japan in the coming days.

1. Super Typhoon Meranti

 

At the number one spot this week is Super Typhoon Meranti. After reaching category 5 strength and maximum wind speeds of 140 mph, Meranti became the strongest tropical cyclone of 2016.

The super typhoon made landfall over the Philippine island, Itbayat before bringing damaging winds, large waves, and flood inducing rains to southern Taiwan. Meranti continued to move west before making landfall in Xiamen, China on Thursday.
