Arizona is Looking to Welcome its First Tropical Storm in Over 20 Years!

Newton has just crossed over the Mexico border into Arizona. This looks to be the first tropical storm to enter into Arizona since Tropical Storm Lester in 1992. Newton’s tropical moisture will bring flooding to the Desert Southwest. Are you ready for the first tropical storm in more than 20 years?

Newton’s Impacts

Up to 0.50 inch of rain has already fallen across some valley locations through the Desert Southwest, with mountainous terrain already seeing between 1 and 2 inches of rain. Rain will continue into tonight, with favored areas of the Mogollon Rim and higher elevations seeing additional rain accumulations of 2-4 inches.

This prolonged rain event will lead to some life-threatening flash flooding, and mud and rockslides through mountainous terrain.

Some gusty winds exceeding 50 mph will impact mountain tops and higher elevations today.
