Fiona Moving Northwest, Prospects for Landfall Unclear…

Tropical Storm Fiona has maintained intensity today, moving northwest over the open Atlantic.  No threat is posed to land in the next few days, however great uncertainty exists about Fiona’s eventual destination, and a landfall for Bermuda or even the US East Coast can’t be ruled out of the question next week and beyond.

Conditions are not favorable in the next few days for Fiona to strengthen much.  As the system approaches waters east and southeast of Bermuda, about 27-30 deg north Latitude, somewhat warmer ocean water temperatures may allow for intensification.  By that time, steering winds will be weakening, and the projected track becomes uncertain.  Model guidance is offering a wide range of solutions.

The bottom line is that no emergency plans are considered necessary at this time, however attention should be paid to forecast advisories, especially next week.  We’ll continue to issue updates for Fiona over our social media feeds (Twitter and Facebook) as long as the storm poses a potential threat.
