Storms to fire across the Northeast today

Over the past few days it’s hard to ignore the fact that it is HOT out and very humid. The atmosphere is filled with so much moisture that all it needs to trigger some storms is instability and a forcing mechanism. Well today we have all ingredients in central New York.

High pressure in the Southeast has been pumping ample moisture and warm temperatures into the Northeast.(More on the heat here.) A persistent nearly stationary warm front is draped across central New York which will act as the forcing mechanism for these storms. Also lots of instability is present to help sustain these storms.

Scattered storms have already started moving across much of New York and Pennsylvania and will continue through the evening with the primary threat of strong wind gusts. They will start moving out of the western PA and NY by around 8 pm while eastern locations will see storms dying off around midnight.
