Severe weather threat for Plains, Midwest, Northern Rockies

Damaging wind and hail will impact several areas of the country on Thursday afternoon and evening.

Midwest: Portions of the region including Chicago and Milwaukee could see the ongoing rain in the region intensify into thunderstorms this Thursday evening. MORECAST meteorologists are not forecasting a hugely favorable environment for severe storms, but isolated strong gusts and hail will be possible.

Texas/Oklahoma/Kansas: Instability building into the area with lots of moisture available will help fire scattered strong storms through the afternoon and evening. Wind profiles through the atmosphere are not favorable for tornadic activity, so expect strong wind and hail to be the main threats.

Northern Rockies/North Dakota: With a low pressure system sitting over the region, convection will fire along the associated fronts this afternoon and evening. Across the high ground of the Rockies, storms ignited with the aid of terrain could be particularly potent, with large hail, isolated tornadoes, and strong gusts. Further storms will pop up in far western North Dakota along a warm front, also with hail and strong gusts.
