A potent cold air mass pushing down from Canada will encounter somewhat unstable air in the Midwest and Plains Friday afternoon allowing for potentially severe thunderstorms to develop.
As conditions destabilize in eastern Kansas and Missouri a line of storms currently pushing through Iowa will intensify bringing an elevated threat for strong winds in bowing segments as well as hail in some of the stronger storms. Conditions should become more stable further east into Illinois though strong gusts will be possible there as well. Looking further west, weaker forcing ahead of the front will cause storms to be more isolated in nature. These storms will have the potential for some hail as well as strong winds and microbursts.
