Mother Nature Stirs Up Severe Storms for Mother’s Day

National Outlook for Severe Weather Mother's Day

Severe thunderstorms in the central Plains and rainy conditions in the Northeast will disrupt Mother’s day plans for some, while others in the Southeast and West coast enjoy sunny skies. MORECAST keeps you up to date with what Mother Nature has in store this Sunday.

Northeast

A cold front moving through the Northeast will bring early morning showers from New York to Maine. Rain showers will move east throughout the day, eventually leading to clearing conditions during the afternoon or evening hours for New York City, Philadelphia and Boston. However, those in Maine will continue to see rain into the evening.

Central Plains

Severe thunderstorms are possible from Nebraska to Southern Texas causing potentially dangerous conditions. These thunderstorms are expected to produce large hail, damaging winds and possible tornadoes. Although Sunday will start off partly cloudy for much of the central plains, storms are expected to develop by the late afternoon and last late into the night. Major cities in the path of these storms could include Dallas, Oklahoma City, Wichita, and Omaha. Be aware this Sunday when traveling or planning outdoor activities in case storms head your way.

Southeast

Clear skies and warm weather in the South will make it a perfect day for outdoor activities with Mom. Although residents in Georgia, South Carolina and North Florida will see more in the way of sunshine, you will have to put up with high temperatures reaching near 90°.

Midwest/Ohio River Valley

From Missouri to western Virginia, isolated showers will bring wet conditions to some residents, with some thunderstorms scattered across the region. However, much of the Midwest will remain dry and sunny, including the Milwaukee, Minneapolis and Detroit areas.

West Coast/Southwest

Portions of California and Arizona will see areas of sunshine Sunday while interior states such as Nevada, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico can expect scattered showers and isolated t-storms. Despite the rain showers later in the day, some states could see sunshine during the morning and early afternoon hours. The highest elevations of the Rocky Mountains are expected to see some light snow, while lower elevations including Denver can expect temperatures rising to the low 60’s.

Northwest

Western Washington, Idaho and Wyoming can expect light rain on Sunday while most of Oregon and Montana remains dry. Seattle and Portland residents can expect mostly cloudy skies with isolated light showers clearing out by the evening hours.
