Strong Storms Expected in Mid Atlantic Tuesday

A cold front will move through the Mid Atlantic Tuesday afternoon, triggering scattered thunderstorms, a few of which may become severe.

While it will not be a severe weather outbreak like the one expected in the Great Plains Tuesday, the potential does exist for a few storms to produce quarter-sized hail and damaging wind gusts. Those in central and southern New Jersey and southeast Pennsylvania (including Philadelphia and Lancaster) should start monitoring conditions at 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, when scattered storms are expected to develop. The small severe threat will continue south into northern Delaware, northern Virginia and northern Maryland (including Baltimore) as well as a small portion of West Virginia late Tuesday afternoon into the evening. But the threat should diminish after sunset, when the warmer conditions needed to energize the storms will subside.

Farther west into Ohio, Kentucky and the rest of West Virginia, scattered showers and thunderstorms are anticipated. However, the severe risk is even lower. That said, a couple of strong storms with heavy rain are possible.
