Tornado Threat Shifts to Carolinas & Mid-Atlantic Today!

The powerful storm responsible for damaging tornadoes in the Deep South on Tuesday has moved northeast with severe storms being seen from the central Carolinas into Virginia and Maryland. The most widespread threat will be destructive winds of 60-75 mph, but tornadoes and large hail will continue as well.

Numerous tornado warnings underway in North Carolina and Virginia with reports of destructive tornadoes and damaging winds continuing from this morning.  The severe threat will be most dangerous around rush hour for Raleigh and Richmond. Storms are just south of the DC metro and will likely move into the area towards the tail end of rush hour. Strong winds are another damaging threat with these storms with the line passing through even outside the tornado warnings. Additionally reports have been coming in the mountains of the Carolinas of damaging wind gusts outside thunderstorms.  We’ll frequently the @MORECAST_NA twitter feed as severe storms continue their march.  Be safe commuting this afternoon and be sure to use the MORECAST app to post pictures of storms in your area!

 

6:30pm EST: Storms winding down in the Nation’s Capital, Richmond, VA and Raleigh, NC. Radar suggests tornado passed directly over Richmond International Airport at around 6:10pm. Raleigh reported gusts of 45mph and DC reports dime to nickel size hail and winds near 60mph. Tornado warnings still in effect northeast of Richmond, VA as well as along the I-95 corridor near the Virginia/North Carolina border. Strong winds will be the primary threat moving into the evening hours but isolated tornadoes can’t be ruled out.

 

7:30pm EST: Heaviest storms pushing east of Baltimore, where winds gusted to 65mph, and approaching Philadelphia. Tornado warned storm just west of Philadelphia in Lancaster County, and the line of thunderstorms should arrive to the city within the next hour. Numerous tornado warnings still in effect in Virginia and North Carolina. Multiple reports of trees down in southern New Jersey and Pennsylvania
