An intense, slow-moving winter storm has begun to plow into the Mid-Atlantic states and will continue into Saturday evening. The storm will produce heavy snow which will combine with driving winds to create dangerous and prolonged blizzard conditions with near-zero visibilities and massive drifts. Snowfall totals of 18-24 inches will be common, with some locations seeing more than two feet, especially west of Interstate 95 in the higher terrain. Winds will gust 40 to occasionally 50 mph at times. Washington D.C. officials have shut down their subway system in anticipation of the hazardous blizzard conditions. Travel will become virtually impossible this evening and Saturday with secondary road closures likely to last through much of next week.
