Blizzard Battering The Mid-Atlantic For The Weekend

MORECAST meteorologists continue tracking a major winter storm, having significant impacts from the Lower Mississippi Valley, northeastward through the mid-Atlantic, including the major metro areas of Memphis, Nashville, Charlotte, Raleigh, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York City.

A major winter storm with blizzard conditions, significant ice accumulation as well as coastal flooding and beach erosion is well underway through the Mid-Atlantic region. Major cities along the East Coast have already recorded close to or over a foot of snow with more on the way throughout the day Saturday. A state of emergency has been declared for Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, West Virginia and Delaware.

Snow totals as of 1pm EST Saturday

New York City: 16″

Washington D.C.: 16″

Baltimore: 21.9″

Philadelphia: 17.1″

Looking Ahead:

For the D.C., Baltimore, and Philadelphia region, snow will continue through most of the day Saturday. Strong wind gusts will accompany this snow, creating blizzard conditions which have already made travel impassable and will likely lead to more road closures. Additionally, the combination of heavy snow and strong winds will lead to the risk of increased power outages along the urban corridor from Washington DC northward to Philadelphia. Look for snow accumulations of 1-2 feet (30-60 cm) across these areas, with locally over 2 feet (60 cm) to the west of Washington, DC.

New York City will see 1-2 feet (30-60 cm), locally up to 30 inches (75 cm), of snow Saturday into early Sunday, with extreme southern New England receiving under 6 inches (15 cm). High tides and strong winds have caused coastal flooding along the coast of New Jersey down into Delmarva.

Through the Southern Appalachians region, a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain has fallen, with portions of North Carolina receiving high accumulations of ice. Hundreds of thousands of residents are without power in North Carolina due to the high ice accumulations on power lines and trees.

Travel and logistical delays have been widespread with thousands of flights canceled. Transit systems in Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and New Jersey have shut down due to the snow. Treacherous roads have caused thousands of accidents and have lead to 9 reported fatalities. Dangerous travel conditions will continue for the Mid-Atlantic region.
